Photos from Jan. 11, 2013, Victoria, BC: Saying Goodbye to ENBRIDGE Hearings, and IDLENOMORE rally

At 11:30 AM on January 11, 2013 people and boats began to gather in Victoria, BC, at the oceanfront walkway in front of the Delta Pacific hotel which had been the venue for the weeklong Enbridge Joint Review Panel hearings. The three committee members were on their way to further hearings scheduled to begin in Vancouver January 14th, and participants wanted to give them a proper goodbye. There was drumming, speeches, songs, and a small supportive flotilla circled out on the water between the Johnson Street Bridge and the Parliament Buildings. A particularly powerful speech was given by local MLA and NDP Environment Critic, Rob Fleming, while City Councilman Ben Isitt participated in the Flotilla.

About 1:00 PM, First Nations members and drummers led the crowd of 100 or more in a slow march across the Johnson Street Bridge to a large square next to Victoria’s City Hall where a huge Idlenomore rally had started. The peaceful march blocked traffic on some lanes of the bridge and shortly past there, the entire street was blocked. The Idlenomore rally, with an estimated 800 or more participants at the peak, was a moving event with a very diverse selection of signs and people, but their common message was a resounding NO to current government policies of resource extraction with no regard to the rights of First Nations nor to the effects on the environment. University Students Leading Endowment Fund Divestment Campaigns in Canada & USA

Divestment from fossil fuels is a major theme of several websites including this one. The City of Seattle, the State of Vermont, the United Church of Christ, and the California Teachers Pension Fund have recently started divestment campaigns. However, university students in both Canada (McGill, U of Toronto, UBC, & U of Ottawa) and the USA (many including Swarthmore and Harvard) have been the leaders of this movement, pressuring administrators of their schools’ endowment funds to stop investing in dirty fuels. Below are links to some of their websites, a podcast, and 4 great videos which expand this idea.

Ithaca University students made these two excellent videos about a divestment campaign at their university:

Bill McKibben’s interview by Leif Utne of “The UpTake” summarizng the purpose of McKibben’s DO THE MATH tour, encouraging divestment from fossil fuels to fight climate change:

Fracking, Drilling can Cause Flammable Water Faucet – MSNBC video of Ohio family

Since a natural gas well was drilled near their home, the well of a young Ohio family in has become so polluted with methane and other toxic chemicals that it is flammable. Unable to afford an $8000 methane filter, they must now purchase all their drinking and cooking water, but still bathe the entire family, including babies, in the poisonous water.

Some “Missing Islands” Animations thanks to Enbridge, Dan Murphy and David Shortt

Sometimes things are just so bad we need a little humour to keep us going. Here are two videos the Vancouver Province’s former animator, Dan Murphy, made to parody the original promotional video from Enbridge (also below) which “Photoshopped” out 1000 square kilometres of islands in the Douglas Channel through which oiltankers would have to navigate; Enbridge threatened to pull funding from the paper unless the Province removed it from their website. Mr. Murphy apparently no longer works for the Province.

THE ORIGINAL ENBRIDGE ANIMATION (BY ENBRIDGE) – utterly, completely amazing bit of fluff. Published on You Tube Aug. 16, 2012 by the Sum of Us society, but was actually published earlier by Enbridge.

HUFFINGTON POST article of August 16, 2012 which exposes the Enbridge animation as misleading:

And here is something which is NOT an Enbridge animation. It is a real photo journey along the route of the pipeline, all the way from Bruderheim to the waiting supertankers at Kitimat ready to take the bitumen to China. Welcome to the real world…

Alberta Lakes show Chemical Effects of Oilsands Polluting Lakes over 50 years

Queen’s University (Kingston, Ontario) scientists released a study today showing 50 years of chemical Effects of Oilsands in polluting lakes, reported in the following video by CBC (sorry, preceded by advertisements):

VIDEO: ENBRIDGE Oil Spill, Tarsands coming from Alberta through Michigan pipeline

This is an example of what a very SMALL Enbridge oil spill looks like, how Enbridge covers it up, and how it treats private citizens and other groups who attempt to monitor or publicize it. The first few minutes document what may be intentional damage to a local whistle blower’s vehicle. But it gets much worse the more you watch. Extremely moving footage…
Thanks to the whistle-blowers, John Bolen Baugh and his wife, to the visitors from farms in Texas, the Nebraska farmer from www.boldnebraska.org and any others involved in the production of this film.

January 5, 2013 Victoria BC IDLE NO MORE Peaceful Blockade of International Ferry COHO

PHOTOS FOLLOW – Click to Enlarge.
On Saturday, January 5, 2013, approximately 500 members of First Nations and followers of the Idle No More movement participated in a peaceful international border blockade in the downtown tourist area of the capital of British Columbia, Victoria. The Black Ball Line’s COHO ferry carries passengers between Port Angeles, Washington, USA and Victoria; its terminal is located 1 block from the provincial capital building and 2 blocks from the world-famous Empress Hotel. The culturally-diverse crowd included many families with children and elders; it also included some who had traveled there from the USA and other parts of Canada.

Signs and speeches referred mostly to preserving the legal rights of First Nations and protecting the environment for future generations. There was strong opposition in particular to to Bill C-45 which severely limits the traditional rights of First Nations and weakens environmental protections, thus ensuring approval of a vast energy corridor of oilsands and tarsands, supplying a network of pipelines and supertankers which would transport oil from Canada to Asia. Some demonstrators also were there to support Chief Theresa Spence who has been on a hunger strike since Dec. 11th, asking to meet with Stephen Harper and the Governor General.

One sign noted the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit SE Alaska and NW British Columbia at 1 am today, resulting in widespread tsunami warnings all the way to Hawaii, and highlighting the serious risk – some would say absurdity – of putting pipelines and supertankers full of oil and bitumen-based fuel in the midst of one of the world’s greatest earthquake/tsunami danger zones.

Drumming and singing began around 2:30 pm in a street previously blocked off by the local police, who, along with ferry customers and staff seemed to accept the demonstrators’ determined though friendly presence, and remained non-confrontational throughout. At 3:30 pm, the COHO pulled into the terminal. Cars and passengers traveling from Canada to the USA were allowed to embark onto the COHO, and foot passengers from the USA were allowed to disembark. However, the demonstration blocked the exit of approximately 35 disembarking vehicles; they were stuck in the terminal parking lot after the COHO had returned to the USA, for approximately an hour.

Around 4:30 pm, several elders proceeded slowly towards the parking lot, then turned to walk up to the demonstration, signaling that it was time for the demonstrators to permit the vehicles to exit the parking lot. The crowd moved back, allowing the vehicles to slowly pass by, greeting each with signs, applause, and drumming. Soon after, the crowd dispersed, satisfied that they’d done what they could for today to bring greater awareness of the dangers facing the environment and the injustice facing First Nations communities.
